USB-A Male Breakout - Horizontal

Our horizontal USB-A male breakout allows you to break out power and data from pretty much any USB socket - be it from a powerbank, computer, USB charger, car USB port, Raspberry Pi...pretty much any USB-A port...with the flexibility to solder wires, headers and more, alongside M2.5 mounting options, underside soldering pads and configuration pads! We also stock a female version.

Each pin from the USB-A connector is broken out to clearly labelled 2.54mm-spaced pads. You can solder whatever you like to these, such as the included 4-pin 2.54mm header strip (great for breadboard usage), some prototyping wire, or even a 4-way 2.54mm terminal block. The connector passes data at USB 2.0 specification.

If you're soldering wires, consider using the underside solder pads. We added these because we know just how tricky it is to de-solder and re-solder a wire from a pad hole. With the underside pads, it's much, much easier to rework and reuse.

On the underside of the board, you'll find two sets of configuration pads for advanced users/use cases:

  • 'SHIELD' - bridging these pads with solder connects GND to the metal shield of the USB-A male connector
  • 'POWER ONLY' - bridge these pads to increase the current that the breakout will pass (doing this also stops data passing). It shorts the data lines, which tells the host device that you're in a power-only scenario, which allows up to 1.5A, depending on the host device (the usual negotiation current is 100-500mA).

We also used M2.5 mounting holes as they're a popular size with easy-to-source fixings.
